Crypto currencies continue their slide towards utter worthlessness … at least for now.

As tech stocks slide, crypto prices continue their downward march: The price of bitcoin briefly fell as low as $4,100 on Tuesday, a far cry from the $6,500 level it had been trading at just a few weeks ago. Meanwhile, the Justice Department is investigating whether bitcoin’s rise last year was fueled partly by market manipulation, and the SEC has ramped up its enforcement of crypto companies. It seems that the SEC enforcement actions, coupled with Bitcoin Cash’s ongoing split (both Bitcoin ABC and Bitcoin SV are still being traded), put additional pressure on crypto prices.

At least tulips were pretty.

I just don’t understand this whole thing—or want to—but if you can issue something, call it “money” and get people to accept it, more power to you. Why, though, does this necessitate a bunch of computers grinding away, wasting vast amounts of energy? WTF are they supposed to be doing that makes your bogus scrip any more believable?

Update: The sous vide pork tenderloin was fucking great! Garlic pepper marinade, vacuum sealed in the bag & set the Joule for 140 degrees at 2 hours. Then cut the loin out of the bag, patted dry and finished off with a short hot pan sear, cut into medallions and dusted with grated parmesan.

Hey, I’m cookin’ over here!

Only the good die young. That was a Billy Joel song?

Fate, Juju, the inevitability, it sometimes comes and robs us of the best, the bright lights…

I am very sad right now.

It’s called “a scam.”

The folks who came up with this convinced others that what they were doing was valuable, backed by nothing but their word. The first people in were the ones who got rich.

President Donald Trump and I had a good call today to discuss GM, the auto industry and how best to support people affected on both sides of the border. We’re going to keep working to address continued trade barriers as we head into the G20 summit this week.

a subtle bit of trolling…Trump railed on about GM bosses for closing plants but Trudeau reminded us that the concern of a President/PM should be for the people affected.

It also played off an ideology and a viewpoint that government were too corrupt to be trusted to manage a currency, and that it was better to trust a bunch of anonymous, faceless speculators…

All the Never-Trumpers or Trump victims like Haley or Flake can run all they want, but will not get out of the starting gate with a majority of GOP primary voters still being rabid Trump fans.

31
Targetpractice  Nov 28, 2018 • 4:29:32am

Among Republicans, some are frustrated that others don’t want to work the long hours that would be necessary to get legislation through, while others, including the many who lost seats as Democrats took over the House of Representatives, want to get home to their families for the holidays.

“Everybody wants to quit at 4 o’clock so they can go home to watch ‘Wheel of Fortune.’ And nobody wants to work on the weekends,” said Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA).

Well no shit, fucknuts. If I knew that I had one month left before I’d have to start looking for a new job, with the ability to fuck off wherever I wanted to in the remaining time left, I sure as fuck wouldn’t put 100% of my effort into my work. The FDA is coming out with a new label for romaine lettuce in the next few days, following the nationwide recall.

Once the label is released, the FDA says you should only buy lettuce with the new label (there is no example of the label yet).

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is now encouraging producers and distributors to label romaine lettuce with a harvest location and date — and cautioning people to only buy romaine lettuce that is labeled thus.

Apparently the wingnut media is struggling to make Donny out as still “winning” post-midterms. Latest effort: Spin Schumer’s floating of an agreement from earlier this year for $1.6B that would go to border security as his “bending” to Donny’s demand for money for the Wall. And Schumer is not only sticking to that, he’s now tacking on the condition that if the funding is to be approved, it has to be as part of a larger bill such as the one to protect Mueller.

The problem with using people like D&S & Not Joe is they don’t really say much. They’re cynical political props to make an elitist and racist party seem what they’re not. They’re used especially D&S to be “Hey they can’t be racist or classist, these two support them.” I wonder what someone like Michael Steele thinks of them. Someone who actually has a political resume and didn’t get to where he is by being a prop. The thing is D&S will be replaced I seriously expect by an equally cynical gay and or Hispanic person. It’d be one thing if D&S and Not Joe actually had intelligent insights to offer but they offer talking points only and a way for the GOP base to feel safe from being called prejudiced or pawns of the very wealthy.

In a new book out Tuesday about his “enemies,” the president said that while he feels “I blow Ronald Reagan away,” the “fake news” media is robbing him of bragging rights by ignoring his successes and focusing on his problems.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Trump is again threatening to shut down the government to get a wall no one actually wants.

Schumer’s got $1.6 billion for a wall in his pocket, but it’s got the poison pill provision the GOP wont want - namely protect Mueller. The GOP knows Mueller’s going to be ripping Trumpworld to pieces, as Butina is now in talks (and there goes the GOP/NRA money-train too), and other pieces of Trumpworld are being positioned by Mueller like dominoes to fall at a time and place of Mueller’s choosing.

That’s why Trump and GOP are so busy trying to claim that everything Mueller’s doing is wrong. They can’t actually point to anything Mueller did as wrong. They’re just trying to smear him, because Mueller has the receipts (and the paper trail going back to the point of origin).

So, when Ivanka tries to claim that her email mess is somehow different than what Hillary did, know that it’s a lie.

Ivanka’s problems are worse - not only did Trumpworld campaign on email security and information security, but she actively flaunted all the rules. Clinton operated under a different set of rules, that allowed for a grey area that allowed the private server setup. Ivanka conducted official business on private email - and that’s a no-no.

Not just a campaign demand, but one he repeatedly swore that Mexico would pay for.

That really is something that the Dems should hold on to his neck. Because you know damn well if they make the taxpayers pay for it and when taxes go up, Trump and the GOP will blame the Dems. Don’t give a damn inch on the wall.

Donny can only pardon for federal crimes, while Paulie violating the terms of the plea agreement means NY and VA can bring his ass down for various state and local crimes. So even if he’s pardoned for the federal crimes, he’s still going to die in jail.

Don Jr and Eric are bad but I find Ivanka even more odious and here’s why. She tries to present a veneer of civility when she’s really not. She needs to be investigated. Both her and her equally crooked hubby. And that means the kids lose their parents, so be it, Ivanka and Jared are both criminals.

To be fair, that really applies to Ivana’s brood. Tiffany seems to have been kept far enough away from Donny that the worst she demonstrates is that emphatic disconnect from those outside her social circle that the wealthy tend to demonstrate. And we’ve seen little of Barron, so there’s no way to tell just how he’ll turn out.

This was backroom politics, that’s all it ever really was. Ryan and Moulton had no real chance of unseating her, they were hoping to somehow build enough leverage to get committee chairs or even leadership chairs for her in exchange for dropping their opposition. Look for a lot of “symbolic” votes today, mostly the new Blue Dog Caucus looking to keep campaign promises not to support her for Speaker.

I hate to break it to you, but having been around wingnuts a lot since he won, I’ve heard all sorts of variations of “He’ll get them to pay another way!” The most popular remains a tax on wire transfers to Mexico, but they also like to believe he’s gonna use funds raised from tariffs or even squeezing some sort of one-time payment out of Mexico as part of a trade deal to do it. So yes, if he goes to them in 2020 and promises to make Mexico pay during his second term, they will believe him implicitly.

I know everyone’s upset about Mississippi’s special election outcome, but let’s also note that over the past few elections, the GOP has consistently won by double digits.

2018- Wicker won 58-39 (a 19 point margin).
2014 - Cochrane won 59-38 (21 point margin).
2012 - Wicker won 57-40 (17 point margin).
2008 - Cochrane won 61-39 (22 point margin).

Last night, Espy lost 54-46, meaning that Hyde-Smith won by… 8 points.

That’s in a state that went hard for Trump. 58-40 (18 points).

Thing to bear into mind is that, given past history in the Trump family, there is gonna be a very messy fight in the courts once Don eats his last cheeseburger over who gets what. Ivana’s trio of shitheads is already maneuvering to cut Tiffany out of the will, and Jared will want a piece if only to prop up his own family’s tottering mess of a real estate “empire,” so Barron could find himself with a very bitter mother screaming in the courts that she deserves a slice of the pie as his elder siblings argue that she was never entitled to anything.

And in 2020 it’s the Republicans which face a bad Senate map (though not as bad as the Democrats this time round), plus two more years of a loose cannon in the White House they are tied to being dragged round the deck.

I’m not much of a political pundit or politician (or I’d have won my reëlection), but 2020 looks pretty good. The GOP is stuck in the position they were with Nixon: When to cut away to try to save their seats.

I can’t speak for other red states, but here the Democrats put up more candidates at all levels of governance than we ever have. We put up a record number of women. In my deep red county, the other two Democrats running for office, both women (a school board on the other side of the county) won and ousted two Republican men.

The trick here is to remind ranchers and farmers that their agricultural woes are not the cause of migrants a thousand miles away, but the trade policies they voted for. Small businesses in the area need the message that those tariffs are hurting and not helping. (I don’t want to see a bad holiday shopping season here but I fully expect one.)

The apocryphal quote of “let them eat cake” comes to mind. While the general sentiment (in keeping with the revolutionary mindset) has always been that she was showing disdain for the plight of the poor, there’s a growing argument in modern times that Antoinette simply did not understand the situation and thought the poor lacked bread due to shortages rather than being unable to afford such.

I think of that now whenever I hear statements like these from Ivanka, that she’s not a heartless bitch so much as a pampered princess whose worldview is so closed off from reality that she can’t understand when others tell her the truth. Her Daddy tells her something and she accepts it as fact because she has nobody there telling her that he’s lying his ass off.

Donny is gonna blink on the Wall, either getting no funding or accepting way less than he demanded. My bet is on the former, agreeing to a short-term funding bill to get him to next spring under the belief that he can either engineer a situation or rely upon the quiet of the pre-Tax Season political landscape to strong-arm the DNC into giving him the funds. Mostly because the latter will come with strings and the most obvious one right now would be giving up his power to fire Mueller in exchange for way less that he was seeking.

Donny can only pardon for federal crimes, while Paulie violating the terms of the plea agreement means NY and VA can bring his ass down for various state and local crimes. So even if he’s pardoned for the federal crimes, he’s still going to die in jail.

And the pardon can be used as further proof of Trump doing it all to obstruct the investigation.

It almost seems like Mueller is dangling that carrot in front of Trump asking him to: “go on take a bite of pardoning Manafort. Come on you know you want to.”

And all of Trumps lawyers and handlers are like: “no, no, no…it’s a trick…the carrot is really dynamite and you are gonna blow yourself and your presidency up if you take a bite.”

I think both did it as a display to the voters in there districts. It was theater for the Pelosi haters. They can say they gave it their best, vote for me again in two years so we can get her out then (knowing she will probably not want the chair and gavel then).

What’s worse for Donny right now, what’s going to keep his lawyers up at night going forward, is one question: “How long has Mueller known?” Best case scenario, this is something he just found out and there’s little chance that he knows more than Manafort’s continued lying.

But if he knew for a length of time, and was feeding bullshit to Manafort that has now turned up in Donny’s open-book test? Or caught an offer being floated to Manafort of a pardon in exchange for continuing to stymie Mueller’s efforts? Yeah, any hope Dershowitz and other defenders had that Mueller’s final report would include no criminal findings goes down the toilet.

Suckers bought into the lies spread by those who claimed that Brexit would somehow benefit NHS and the Brits - giving them some amorphous sovereignty that they’ve otherwise lacked as a part of the EU.

Turns out that the only ones who benefit from Brexit aren’t in the UK or EU.

They’re in Russia as they watch the EU torn apart and the parts are less capable than the whole. The UK economy is far worse off than if it remained.

All this inertia to try and go to Brexit is because the proponents have nothing else. If they admit failure, they’re tossed out on their ear (they should be). Going forward, they should be tossed out anyways. Nothing they’re doing supports a strong UK. It shows that they are so much like Trump in being economically illiterate and incapable of accepting basic facts.

The UK will be worse off no matter how the UK leaves the EU. The only question is how bad it will be (and it will be pretty bad).

There was a great story on Why Republicans Love to Attack Nancy Pelosi which also discussed her history on WAMU yesterday afternoon discussing her history before she moved to SanFran. She grew up in a serious mover-shaker political household.

I’m a little familiar with her father, Thomas D’Alesandro Jr since he was responsible for getting the St. Louis Browns to move to Baltimore and become the Baltimore Orioles when he was Baltimore’s mayor and as I’m a big Orioles fan and history reader, you can fill in the blanks. Nancy’s older brother was mayor of Baltimore too. The right tried to shame Pelosi by pointing out that Mayor D’Alessandro dedicated a Lee statue which is stupid given that Lee’s own direct descendant has called out the statues. Here is something interesting that I didn’t know though: Compare that with Trump’s father.
D’Alesandro was then elected to the 76th Congress and to the four succeeding Congresses, serving from January 3, 1939, until he resigned on May 16, 1947. While in Congress, D’Alesandro strongly supported the Bergson Group, a “political action committee set up to that challenged the Roosevelt Administration’s policies on the Jewish refugee issue during the Holocaust, and later lobbied against British control of Palestine” despite his equally strong support for Roosevelt’s other policies.[2]

Or, will they all jump in the Kasich bus and start that centrist conservative party in less than a year?

I tell you, that would not surprise me in the least. Kasich could easily take on the mantle of all those never Trumpers and I can see them all saying he is their dream of a workable conservative that can cut across party lines.

Okay, I am now nauseous. I better grab the Pepto!

Thus splitting any republican (or conservative or whatever you want to call them) voters into tiny fractions. There’s the evangelicals - who God only knows which way they will go, likely trump since for whatever reason they see him as the 2nd coming, the small government (ahem) Republicans, who would break for Kasich or whomever else might run, the bible belt southerners who could go for trump’s racism but more likely some other schmuck who’s racist but more in the wink and nod vein…those who don’t like the in-your-face racism that trump and his crew espouse.

Interesting story about immigrant mother of child who died while in detention suing U.S. government for 60 million being responsible for her death.

NBC4i - US sued for $60 million after infant in detention later died

HOUSTON (AP) — The mother of a toddler who died weeks after being released from the nation’s largest family detention center filed a legal claim seeking $60 million from the U.S. government for the child’s death.

Attorneys for Yazmin Juarez submitted the claim against multiple agencies Tuesday. Juarez’s 1-year-old daughter, Mariee, died in May.

Juarez’s lawyers said Mariee developed a respiratory illness while she and her mother were detained at the South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley, Texas. They accused U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement of releasing the pair while Mariee was still sick.

The girl died six weeks later in Philadelphia.

Washington-based law firm Arnold & Porter said it will file a lawsuit if the government doesn’t settle its claim. R. Stanton Jones, a lawyer at the firm, said the government has six months to respond before his firm can file suit.

“Having made the decision to jail small children, the U.S. government is responsible to provide living conditions that are safe, sanitary and appropriate,” Jones said.

ICE and other agencies listed in the claim said they wouldn’t comment on pending litigation.

Jones has also submitted a $40 million claim against the city of Eloy, Arizona, which officially operated the Dilley detention facility under a “pass-through” agreement with ICE and the private prison company CoreCivic. ICE and CoreCivic replaced its agreement with Eloy in September with an arrangement made with the city of Dilley.

Advocates have long complained that medical care in Dilley is substandard and that detaining families damages their mental health. ICE has defended the care it provides at Dilley, saying detainees have access to medical professionals.

“ICE takes very seriously the health, safety and welfare of those in our care,” spokeswoman Jennifer Elzea said in a statement.

Dilley is now being used to detain mothers and children, some of whom were reunited in detention after being separated earlier this year under Trump administration policy.

re: #148 Targetpractice

The apocryphal quote of “let them eat cake” comes to mind. While the general sentiment (in keeping with the revolutionary mindset) has always been that she was showing disdain for the plight of the poor, there’s a growing argument in modern times that Antoinette simply did not understand the situation and thought the poor lacked bread due to shortages rather than being unable to afford such.

I think of that now whenever I hear statements like these from Ivanka, that she’s not a heartless bitch so much as a pampered princess whose worldview is so closed off from reality that she can’t understand when others tell her the truth. Her Daddy tells her something and she accepts it as fact because she has nobody there telling her that he’s lying his ass off.

turn on a tv (not fox)
read a book
open a newspaper (again…)
use the internet (still…)

as an adult, one ostensibly involved in the highest levels of government, “no one to set her straight” would be an awfully feeble excuse.

that dad has cultivated in-curiousness (incuriosity?) as an artform and therefore so has she, yeah, that’s possible.

This means in suburban areas you can flip some (R) to (D). Happened here.

The ex-Jefferson County (AL) DA yesterday [Mike Anderton - (R)] said “I was fired”. Dude doesn’t get how elections work.

Unlike the ACA where it was stated the insurance companies cannot charge you more for those preexisting conditions.

Instead of all that [the “daily” lieathon], MSNBC carried segments on the following topics: Trump’s trade wars; the state of the auto industry, in light of GM’s announced plant closings; the stock market and the welfare of the U.S. worker; a deadly attack on U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan; a Guardian report that Paul Manafort, the former Trump campaign chairman, had met with Julian Assange; and the U.S. Senate election in Mississippi. After the press briefing concluded, MSNBC plowed ahead with more on GM, including an interview with Hamtramck, Mich., Mayor Karen Majewski, a segment on the Mueller investigation, a politics roundup, a mention of “giving Tuesday.”

Look what you can accomplish when you decline to hand over your airwaves to unreliable narrators.

What I want to say is a candidate who talks proudly of our diversity. How yes we do have differences but our differences is what has made us great. It’s a country where children and grandchildren of the Great Migration played Little League or Youth Basketball with people whose family have been in the area for a long time or were transplants like mine. A country where people of European descent can break bread at a family owned Thai or Afghan restaurant. A country where we can learn about our neighbors’ cultural traditions. When my one brother was a boy, one of his classmates brought in latkes to celebrate Hannukah and he really enjoyed them. Don’t stick to your own kind. Acknowledge everyone is your kind.

And it is the same wording the Republican use about health insurance about preexisting conditions.

You have access to health insurance…we guarantee that. We can’t guarantee you can afford it, but hey…what do you want us to do?

Unlike the ACA where it was stated the insurance companies cannot charge you more for those preexisting conditions.

Conclusion: Republicans are scum and they use weasel words to sound good to the rubes that are not smart enough to look at those words and figure out what they really mean.

The rubes vote for them…we all get screwed.

Fuck the Republicans and fuck the rubes.

spot on
exactly what i was thinking when i wrote it.

and i think i read recently they’re getting more nasty with pre-existing
- somtheing about yeah these new policies will(!) cover you if you have a pre-existing condition
- but they wont pay for any of your pre-existing condition related services

its pure evil

I didn’t even know Bloomberg had a daughter. He’s said to be possibly be running in 2020. I hope not. He’s not a bad person or anything like that but he’s not the direction the left needs to go in and neitehr is Bernie for that matter. We need someone who gets not only what it’s like to be less well off in America but someone who gets what it’s like to not to be the majority IMO.

Georgina Bloomberg and Jessica Springsteen are champion show-jumpers (or maybe I should say… riders of champion horses). It’s a super-expensive sport, and somewhat unfair that the riders (who also put up the money) get all the credit when it’s really the trainers and horses whose talents deserve the acclaim, but so it goes.

Part of what makes it so expensive (besides that just buying the horse in the first place is six figures minimum, some of the yearlings from champion lineage go for seven figures at auction) — is that the horse needs 5 or 6 years of training before they can even qualify for their first competition. They need a lot of space, the rider has to spend 5 or 6 hours every day with the animal so people who need to earn a living will never be able to do it, and that saying “don’t look a gift horse in the mouth”? They eat a LOT. And none of it’s budget-price.

a good perspective:

Nathan Gonzalez: “After two years of fighting, spending, and campaigning, and one party being handed a very favorable map, the U.S. Senate will be one seat different at the beginning of the 116th Congress than it was at the beginning of the 115th Congress. Republicans gained two Senate seats in the November elections, but lost the Alabama race in the Dec. 2017 special election. So the net change is minimal. The GOP majority shifted from 52-48 in Jan. 2017 to 53-47 in Jan. 2019.”

Trump’s likely to hang Junior out to dry, and then turn around and pardon his sorry ass.

Junior’s already indicated that dad knew.

Trump’s already got so many inconsistencies in his story that his latest fabrications aren’t likely to make it any better for him, and are likely to make it far worse.

His lawyers know this. That’s why they were trying to avoid a deposition, where Mueller’s team could nail him for lying every which way to Moscow and back.

But they can’t help that their client lies about everything and doesn’t listen to advice. Mueller knows this too. He also has the receipts for everything (he knows answers before you ask questions, because that’s what good prosecutors are supposed to do). Good defense lawyers are supposed to do the same, but Trump’s team is a band of misfits and have an egotistical liar as a client who thinks he knows better than everyone else in the room.

Tweets like this are MISLEADING. People should keep calling their Senators for a NO vote on the final.

People who rely on FB or Twitter for news deserve to be misled…

All of this is just a couple weeks road bump in the GOP objective of reshaping the judiciary. Come January 3rd there is no impediment to anyone Trump nominates.

Why?

(though I have to wonder why he’d bother voting “yes” now but “no” later)

If he blocks closure, then it can be brought up again. If he says no on the final vote, that’s it for the nominee.

Why?

Because come January 3rd the Republicans control 53 votes in the senate.
You think that they can get 4 No votes out of those for judicial nominees, when getting 2 now is practically insurmountable?

Twitter and FB can be sources of information on current events from locations where news reporters are slow to follow up, especially in crisis situations.

But in general, get your news from a reliable source and leave Twitter and FB for news from and about your homies and where they be hangin’

The last place I look for news is FB. In fact, I never go to FB for news. Why? Because I know where to find better sources. Breaking news? I try to find the news source closest to where it’s happening. Go direct to local news outlets, like when there are mass shootings in places like San Bernardino or Aurora or Las Vegas. Then look for their twitter feeds.

It’s as though there’s a progression for where/how to get reliable info. FB is at the ass end of that space.

It would be nice if it were that way. Just like, when I was a kid, the people around me got most of their news through gossip rather than the TV and newspaper.

I still recall my GF showing me an article from her FB feed with the title “Great Barrier Reef Declared Dead”

Even a cursory reading of the article indicated that was not the case at all.

FB is for news about what your friends had for lunch or cute kid/animal pics & videos, bands playing in town, etc.

I maintain my belief that he’s gonna end up resigning before it’s all over. He’ll keep with the Nixon tradition, not in the “For the good of the country” Watergate-style exit, but the bitter “You don’t have Nixon to kick around anymore” style stomping off.

That is never going to happen.

re: #332 lawhawk

Oh, I completely agree. Over the past 20 years, he’s gone from building his own projects to slapping his name on stuff other people build and manage. Buildings he owns are far more limited - mostly in NYC - from Trump Tower and Trump Village (middle class apartments). His so-called luxury offerings like Trump tower are long in the tooth and no longer prized addresses especially when billionaire’s row has 30-50 million dollar condos available with views from over 1,000 feet up in the sky.

The one advantage of buying a unit in Trump Tower: the view is not spoiled by having to look out at Trump Tower.
